As it is with everything, using new products on your skin requires some getting used to. This is a normal reaction for many. It isn't something to be feared but rather something to embrace. Of course, there are instances the skin downright rejects new products. How can you tell the difference?
Skin reactions to look out for
Essentially, there are two major skin reactions to look out for. When any of these occur, stop use immediately.
Irritant contact dermatitis
This occurs when the skin gets irritated after using the products. It usually becomes itches, burns extremely or gets darker very quickly. In severe cases, you might experience blisters.
Allergic contact dermatitis
This kind of reaction occurs if the skin is allergic to the new products used. The immune system usually sends signals which occurs in the form of swelling and hives. Look out for signs on the neck, ears, eyes, lips and face.
Normal skin reactions
It takes the skin anywhere between 2 to 8 weeks to get used to new skincare products. It depends from person to person. Different people react differently but if you experience any of the outlined, it is normal and part of the skin's purging (natural detoxing) process
- Little rashes
- Whiteheads
- Blackheads
- Cysts
- Dry, flaky skin. Peeling might occur in some cases
Purging lasts 6 weeks on the average after which your skin starts to heal. Do not discontinue use of skincare products whilst purging. It'll be over soon.
One thing we need to understand is two people can use the same skincare products but react differently. Do not compare your skin care journey with someone else.
